Spray hangs in the air, engines hammer the river, and a championship teeters on a half‑boat‑length margin. We crack open a restored broadcast from the 1964 APBA Gold Cup in Detroit and ride every surge, swerve, and split‑second decision that made this one of the most dramatic finishes in unlimited hydroplane history. This is all in thanks to Bob Van Den Akker who donated audio footage to the podcast!

Unfortunately, the first set of heats were not recorded, so we drop into Heat 2A with Chuck Thompson’s Tahoe Miss carving through rough water while Notre Dame’s Bill Muncey chases in hot pursuit!

SPEAKER_00:

Today is November 11th, 2025. Now, before we get into the details about today's episode, I want to say happy veterans' day out there to all the veterans. Thank you for your service. I appreciate all that you do and have the support of this country and keep us safe. I hope that you are getting a day of rest. Your support that you should and thanks that you should be getting because uh we are indebted to you and thank you, veterans, for all that you have done. Now for this episode today, we're gonna travel back in time to 1954. We're going to Detroit Michigan for the 1964. And this is largely this is entirely thanks to Bob Venenacher. Bob Ehrenacker is a lifetime supporter and fan of unlimited hydrogen racing. I've known him for the past 25 years, racing RC electric boats with him. A great person. Fun to be around, a huge supporter of the support. And I want to say thank you to Bob for making this happen. Um different collections. I hate over here, I've gotten my hands on those. I'm I'll have a few fun surprises next year with this. Um this actually will be the last episode for the season of season after today because uh uh life is just gonna be getting busier and busier with work and school and everything else in between. So I hope you can enjoy an extra long episode as we travel back to 1964. Unbelievable. At this race, and I think we're gonna have a lot of fun going back and listening to this race. There's some fun interviews along the way, it's fun to hear the commentator uh the commentators talk about the sport and the racing going on. Unfortunately, we don't have the first fight of heat, but we're gonna enter halfway through into QA as Chuck Thompson has a sizable lead. And uh Bill Muncie might be in a little bit of trouble. Hope you're comfortable because we got a long episode today. We're gonna travel back to 1964 for the APBA Gold Cup.

SPEAKER_02:

Chuck Thompson is just marking like amazing through these first. And believe me, the river is rough. He's leading Notre Dame by six seconds. And Bill Mumpsy seems to have closed the gap somewhat as he's on the back stretch of lap number two, or rather lap three of each two. Chuck Thompson in the lead. Mumpsey said he'd push him hard enough if he got behind. He wants to force these boys into an engine change before this day is over. Turn one miss now is entering the upper corner on lap number three. He leads Notre Dame by six seconds, and the distance is about 150 yards as they move into the turn as Bill Munsey closes its way down. A half a lap behind. We have a terrific duel between Gale 5 and X side. Gale five with Rex Manchester holding off the X side. It'll be a rough break if Bill Garrell finishes fourth in fifth place, way behind at the US. Munchie slipped, uh Munsey hit a bully. Uh miss went over.

SPEAKER_03:

Munsey hit a bully with motor game. He spun sideways and ran over a bully. Munchie uh he has dropped carriage.

SPEAKER_02:

Uh uh indicating something took off hands off to Leo. Uh, I don't exactly know what happened out there, but just Munsey ran over pulley number 19 in the upper turn. This could be a disqualification, uh, depending on the judge's interpretation of the hole. And uh Munsey uh lost a lot of ground. Aye oh my a turn of events now, terrific lead for Terho Myth. Chuck Thompson continues to move now. He's got a big, big margin. And remember, it was in the second heat last year. It was in the second heat last year when Bill Muncie was closed down when he had that string of bad luck, and then in the first play, he never was able to get back in contention. And here he has run over a boy, boy number 19. He ran over it on the third lap of E2A, and now Carl Miss has a tremendous lead of about 20 seconds out on the back stretch. Chuck Thompson leads by about 400 yards, and his time for that last lap was 107. 107. This is a rather strange E2A. Chuck Thompson uh seems rather just uh unaffected by the whole thing. Uh he is pulling off the upper turn, he's driving it as if the boy was still there. Uh, he's right in a grove, he's off the corner coming down to finish his fourth lap with a tremendous lead over. Notre Dame was running under reduced power now, and Gale 5 and Ikside are coming up rapidly. And this time Ross into third place, Xide is in third.

unknown:

Bill Paul is charged past to Gale 5, and Notre Dame is under reduced power.

SPEAKER_02:

109 on that lap for Townhoe miss in the lead going into the last lap. Town misses in the middle of the stretch. In second place is Notre Dame having trouble. In third place is uh Gale and X side dueling their float for both. Here we have a terrific battle coming up. Notre Dame is just back for farming, and Bill Musty is in trouble. Here's X side in third place. A terrific goal! Exit and Gale are moving up on Notre Dame now. Judge Thompson is in the lead, he's got a terrific margin. Exit is charging into second place with Gale 5, and Notre Dame is um has split back now. It looks like to fourth place. This is a tremendous turn of events and heat uh 2K. We didn't think that Muncie would encounter any problems, but he bounced wildly and ran over a bully in the upper turn. And since then, the Notre Dame has just not been performing. X side has now moved into second. Gale 5 has now moved into third. Notre Dame is fourth, and turn will miss his home 30 in the lead here.

unknown:

Two thirds of the way down the back shooter, lap number five. He's leading by over 30 seconds now. His time was 108.5 on the last lap.

SPEAKER_02:

Chuck Thompson is targetedly charging. He's now coming into the upper turn. A full straightaway ahead of Miss Xide, and somewhere Bill Burrow got up uh some power. He has really come on this last lap with X side. U.S. 5 is coming by in last place, running very, very rough. And now here comes Harris Tahoe miss down to get the checkered flag. Chuck Thompson coming in for the checkered flag and the winner in Heat 2A. It's the second victory in a row. Tahoe miss. Tahoe miss. The winner of heat 2A. Exide second. Gale 5 is third. Notre Dame is fourth. And Charlie Mendelson, McDonald's, Notre Dame is under reduced power. And this will partial force Munzie and make an engine change if he has any mechanical problems. Here's Miss Xide now, driven by Bill Brown. Eight minutes 26 seconds was the time for Chuck Thompson. Murray, Murray, that was a wild and woolly heat. Here's Gale 5 driven by Rex Manchester coming over. 106. 106.719. And in rough water, that is pretty good driving by Chuck Thompson. Notre Dame now coming over for it. Bill Muncie disgusted waiting. And uh after charging very nicely through the first lap, Notre Dame fell into second place when Tahoe took him. And then when Muncie ran over the boy, he just uh didn't seem to have it for the rest of the uh heat. Miss U.S. is still out on the course, uh running under very, very reduced speed.

unknown:

Darren Wilson is not at all in contention today for some reason. We expected U.S.

SPEAKER_02:

to be a pretty solid contender, but he just hasn't materialized. The winner of Heat 2A, Harris Carol Miss by 21 seconds over Miss Xide, who made a great charge on those last two laps with Bill Burrow driving. We'll have some unofficial averages on this uh heat 2A in just a moment. This Gold Cup coverage is being brought to you over radio. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, we're now trying to check over the uh times for the boats in Heat 2A, which was kind of a wild heat. Certainly the best battling we've had thus far today on the Gold Cup course. And the winner, Chuck Thompson, came from a very bad start. One of the uh it looked to me to be one of the uh uh one of the worst uh starts that Chuck has made in quite a while. He was throttled way down as they came over the line, and Notre Dame, uh Gale 5, and uh Miss Xide all came in ahead of him. But as they went into the first turn, uh terrific burst of boat speed, pushed Tahoe Miss into second behind Notre Dame and came off the corner, uh, and Notre Dame was still in the lead with Bill Muncie driving. Tahoe Miss charging right up behind him. He took him uh midway in the second lap, and then uh on lap three, the Notre Dame, driven by Bill Muncie, running in second place, was attempting to move up on Tahoe Miss when he ran over boy number 19, or uh uh looks like boy number 18 now, which would be the last marker boy in the upper turn. Uh the Notre Dame slid sideways, uh, looked like Bill lost control of the boat for just a moment, and they drove right over the boy, and after that, slowed down considerably. This X-side and Gale 5 were battling for third and fourth position, then moved up, and with a tremendous burst of speed, Bill Burrow came into second place with Gale third. They finished with Poor Hole Miss first, X side second, Notre Dame uh Gale 5 was third, Notre Dame was fourth, and then Miss US5 trailed the field by a very wide margin. Speeds were considerably faster in this heat than we have seen thus far, and unofficially we have two hole miss turning one lap in the neighborhood of 112 miles an hour. Here are the unofficial averages for the first four boats. Terrible Miss was first, 06.719.

unknown:

Second place was Miss Xide, 02.466, Xide trail by 21 seconds. Third place, Gale 5, 99.815, Gale 5 trailed by 35 seconds.

SPEAKER_02:

Fourth place, Notre Dame, 97.297, and uh we will of course uh check with the judges to see if there is a disqualification coming on Notre Dame for running over that boy. And then in fifth place, Miss U.S. 5, driven by Don Wilson, trailed almost a minute and a half time the leader, fur out of contention, and uh a rather disappointing performance for the U.S. U.S., as I said, burnt very, very badly on the first lap of the heat. Uh, we could see a terrific cloud of spray shoot out from the side of the rooster tail, indicating that the U.S. had taken a very violent leap in the middle of the first stretch. And apparently uh something went uh wrong mechanically with the U.S. Uh she slowed down, and then Don Wilson got her going again. But uh by the time he was uh under full head of steam again, he was well behind the leaders and coasting along. Uh and at the end it looked as though he was not only having mechanical problems, but he was uh looking into the cockpit as if something was uh blown down either in the engine well or at the rear of the boat, one or the other. Uh he was not getting a good ride, certainly. His second heat victory in a row, and incidentally, up until today, he had only won two heats in Bowl Cup competition in eight previous Gold Cup races. So he's already uh equaled his previous record and has got four more as the afternoon continues. Here is Carhole Miss First, Heat 2A, second Miss X from Seattle, third, Gale 5, fourth, Notre Dame, fifth, Miss US 5. That's it for Eat 2A. We'll have 2B in just about 20 minutes. Uh, we have an official summary of E2A. The winner, Tahoe Miss, second was Miss X, third was Gale 5, Miss US 5 was 4th, and Notre Dame was 5th. Uh Bill Hunty was required to go an extra lap for running over the 18th marker boy on the course. He had to go an extra lap and therefore finished fifth. So the points on those five votes, Tahoe Miss now has 800, sitting very well at the end of two heats. Uh Miss Xide has 600 points. Notre Dame has 527, Miss U.S. 338, and Gale 5, who failed to start the first heat, has 225 points. The votes are out in the course now for 2B. Here's uh Madison and Smirnoff coming by. Bardall is on the back stretch. Dollar Bill is down at the lower end of the course. And uh Eagle Electric has also come out. Bluechip has been scratched from E2B. Uh we don't exactly know the reason. Uh blue chip was not running well at the end of the first heat, which was stopped when Bob Schroeder was thrown out of his boat. And then uh it seemed that some uh material was flying off the hull, and perhaps blue chip has suffered hull damage uh too extensive to repair in time. We don't know, we'll try and find out for you later on. Uh, in just a few moments, we'll have the start of heat two bee. This gold cup is starting to shape up into a terrific battle. This is Bill Jurzick in Detroit on Radio King. The Gold Cup coverage today being brought to you by Security Civisco.

SPEAKER_04:

Today is the First Day of July. Security Civesco.

SPEAKER_02:

As Eagle Electric goes by, we are ready now for the running of heat two B of the Gold Cup race. The second heat in this four-heat race is probably one of the most important because it positions the boats on point and lets them know exactly what they're going to have to do as the race progresses. And certainly anybody in any difficulty at the end of each two will have to make an engine change and will have to go all out the rest of the afternoon. Miss Bardall, the second place finisher in the first heat, has drawn some of the boats that uh started out on the slow side today. Miss Schmirnoff, Dollar Bill, Eagle Electric, and Miss Madison. And so Ron Muffin, if he is out to defend that Gold Cup, and I'm quite certain that he uh intends on doing just that, he will have to really charge in this heat because he not only is trailing on points, but he is also behind on elapsed time, which may be important in case of a tie. All five boats are on the course and running. We're waiting the one minute gun. This is the 56th running of the Gold Cup, and it's shaping up as one of the best. And it's not even half over yet. That's the incredible thing. Three heats of action in, four heats to go. And I think some of our best battling and dueling of the day is yet to come. Ronnie Muffin turning into the course now with Bardall. El Catrell sitting alongside of him in Mich turnout. There's the one-minute gun. The boats respond by charging to the center of the course, and that's Bardall cutting for possession. A roar in the background. Eagle Electric and Madison are coming up the back stretch. Dollar Bill is turning around to get into the phrase. Another start coming up D2B. This one looks like a siddler. As Ronnie Muskin is charging with that rolls engine. A deep throat sound that he gets out of the Bardall. Leo Vandenberg has worked tirelessly in the past few months to get the Bardall running in top shape. And although she was third at Guntersville, she looks like one of the big contenders here. Coming down with Schmirnoff now. 20 seconds to start. Bardall will be in the center of the court. On the inside, it looks like uh either Schmirnoff or uh Dollar Bill. A bad start for Eagle Electric. Here comes Bardall in the center of the court. There's eight seconds left. Most of the boats are throttled down. Miss Madison is going to make a good start. Three seconds. Here they go.

SPEAKER_03:

Miss Madison and Mr.

SPEAKER_02:

Fardall. Miss Madison and Miss Fardall over the line first. And then came Miss Mirall, followed by Dollarville. Totem Evans and Eagle Electric got a very, very bad start.

unknown:

He trails the field as they start down the first stretch.

SPEAKER_02:

Madison was in the lead as they came across. Bardall was right next to him, though. Ronnie got a good start alongside. And he has now pushed Bardall into the lead as they go down the main stretch. With Madison charging right alongside of him. The boats now move into the first turn. It looks like the Green Dragon has got it on the inside. Miss Bardall. Ronnie Muson out in front with the Bardall. Number U40. Green, trimmed in yellow and black. A beautiful sight as she charges down past the Bell Al Bridge now and moves out toward her run on the back shooter. P2B. Second place is a battle between uh looks like uh Mishmirnoff and Miss Madison. They're about 100 yards now already behind the Bardall. Mishmirnoff uh bouncing badly over there is coming off the corner now. Is Ronnie Musin. He's about one third of the way under a full bar. Miss Madison is second. Smirnoff now has come up and is dueling for third. We're trying to pick out the other boats as they come down. It looks like uh Dollar Bill trails the field. Eagle Electric is back also in the pack. Now, two-thirds of the way down the back shoot on his first to five times around the course. Ronnie Musson in the fire hall bounces wildly as he passes in front of the sprout at the Detroit Yacht Club. And he manages to keep her upright. Second is Madison, he's 150 yards behind. Charging in his rooster tail is Michael, driven by Bill Cantrell, a veteran of 19 Gold Cup. Fourth place, 300 yards behind in Eagle Electric, 400 yards behind is Dollar Bell. The boys are straining as they come into the upper turn. And the leader is Ronnie Muson driving Miss Bardall. Here he comes down. Uh passing the 1,000 foot mark and moving down to finish lap number one. Bardall is over, finishing lap number one, 105 miles an hour for Miss Bardall in the first lap. Here's Miss Madison second. Trying to fight off a challenge of Bishnoff driven by Bill Cantrell. And he is getting a rough ride in that new boat. Bouncing wildly. Here's Eagle Electric fourth. And Tomerville is fifth as they come by. The leader is Miss Bardell now. Going into the turn by the Bell Ao Bridge. He has an eight-second lead over Miss Madison. He is 13 seconds ahead of Mish Schmirnoff. Fourth place, Eagle Electric, who got a bad start. Norm Evans has come up fast. He's smoking uh quite a bit. They're running a bit rich as he comes by and he pits. But uh he is still fourth. Dollar bill driven by 21-year-old Billy Schumacher is last. Running in fifth spot. He's giving a good account of himself, though. He has charged very hard on the heels of those leaders. And Miss Bardall with a big lead comes off the exit mark and starts down for the second of five times. And Ronnie Muston right where he likes to be now, all alone. Out in front. He has the good water. He's halfway down the back shoot, leveling out the rooster tail, kicking. He's getting a good ride. His rooster tail is smooth. He's starting to bounce a little bit now. And the nose seemed to go down slightly, but he kicks it again. And he now holds a 350-yard lead over Madison. Schirnoff is third. And I noticed that Eagle Electric and Dollarville have closed the margin somewhat on Schirnoff and Madison in the race for second and third. And Ron is now cut down considerably coming into the upper turn. He is not going to take any chances yet. There will be plenty of action left in this Gold Cup race after this. Heat is over. Madison is just not uh riding very well in this rough water. Buddy Byers is still second, but having trouble hanging on to that uh steering wheel. He's bouncing wildly. Here comes Fardall down now to finish lap number two. Bouncing a little bit. And uh Ron took his hand off the wheel and kind of shook it. I don't know if he is uh if he's got a sore wrist or something. He's bouncing very, very badly out here and uh could be shaken up a bit. Miss Madison is over second now. Arnold's time, three minutes 30 seconds. Here's Michael's third. Going over. And now the boats are starting to fan out. Eagle Electric is running very, very well. And then on his point. And now Billy Shoemaker is moving in, trying to challenge Norm Evans for fourth position in the California boat dollar bill. Miss Farnell, three minutes and thirty seconds at the end of two laps. He leads by 11 seconds over Miss Madison by 17 seconds over Miss Schmirnoff. He's coming off the lower corner just as Miss Madison reaches the third marker boy, and just the Schmirnoff is coming in. His time on that second lap was a minute 47, 101. So Harris Carl Miss is proving to be the boat that is performing best thus far today in the Gold Cup in this rough water. But uh perhaps this isn't the case. Perhaps Ronnie Musson, who's in the lead right now, and heat to be is just sitting back, saving his engine. He has got a great crew behind him and is still to be reckoned with. He's leading in Heat 2B. If he wins it, he'll have 700 points and will move him to second place overall. Bardo now passing the yacht club. He's not taking any chances. He is throttling down well in front of those yacht club docks. Second place now, Miss Madison, about 350 yards behind, has opened up a good margin on Spernoff. The boats are fanning out. And now here comes Dollar Bell. Billy Schumacher making a great try to pass Norm Evans out on the back shoot. They are dueling bow to bow out there in uh fourth and fifth place. Here's uh Arnall now finishing lap number three. Uh Ronnie Muston over the line, finishing lap number three, five minutes and fourteen seconds. His time on that lap 104. 104 for Bardall. Uh we've heard that Chuck Thompson may have done a lap at 112 here in the last heat. Unofficial, however. And Madison is now running second. Third place, Mish Murdoff. And now Billy Schumacher is driving beautifully on these turns. Charges inside with Dollar Bell, and he has taken fourth place away from Norm Evans. Some great driving by Billy Shoemaker. He moves into fourth place now, driving his first goal cup rate. He has passed Eagle Electric and now he's going out after Bill Cantrell. A real creditable job of driving being done by Billy Shoemaker. We're in the fourth lap. Bardall leads Ms. Madison by 19 seconds. He leads Miss Smyrnoff by 29 seconds. Ronnie Muston now is a third of the way down the back shoot on his fourth of five times around the course. Hope you're enjoying this Gold Cup race. The 56 run coming to you from Detroit over Radio King, your hydroplane station. Bill Jerusalek here on the Garwood judges stand. Bardall two-thirds of the way now. And number U-40, the defending champion in the lead, with uh one of the many television cameras that are here hovering along in a helicopter. Bardall now has passed the acceleration mark and is into the upper turn. He is leading by about a mile over Miss Madison. Madison seems to be slowing down a little bit. Let's go down through the field. Bardall is coming off the upper turn on his fourth lap. Madison is just passing the outclub, a mile behind. About 300 yards behind Miss Madison is Mitch Murnoff.

unknown:

Third.

SPEAKER_02:

Fourth place, Dollar Bill, fifth place, a lap, uh, half a lap behind. Miss Angel Richard. That was Ron Lussen going by. And Miss Bardall, defending national champion, defending Gold Cup champion. And he is sitting very, very well today in the Gold Cup, leading in heat to be. He will have 700 points if he manages to last out this one last lap. And he has slowed down enough that he looks like he's staying in real good position. Miss Bardall in the lead as he moves into the lower turn now by the Bell Isle Bridge. He's past the second marker boys. Here's Bish Murdoff coming by third. Dollar Bill is still fourth. Eagle Electric is fifth. Miss Bardall is uh coming off the corner now by the Detroit Boat Club.

unknown:

Ron Musson.

SPEAKER_02:

Ron Muson uh now is uh bouncing off that corner. He puts his foot into that Bardall and charges down the chute. Miss Bardall, one of the most successful of unlimited hydro plays, qualified at 117 miles an hour. Ron Mussen, a man to watch. He's been in three Gold Cups. He's finished third, second, and first. He's never been out of the money, and he has not yet failed to finish a heat in his Gold Cup career. He has started 12 heats and he's coming by. Looks like he will finish his 12th heat in a row. Incidentally, Bill Mumpsy finished his 14th consecutive Gold Cup heat just a few minutes ago. He's moving in on one of Gold Cup racing's all-time records, held by Garwood. Here is Miss Bardall now, coming off the upper turn. He will get the checkered flag. It was a legal start for all concerned. Bardall coming off and coming down to finish lap number five, just as Miss Madison goes into the turn. Here's Miss Bardall, the winner. Miss Bardall, the winner of EP. Driven by Ron Muffin. It's time, eight minutes and 45 seconds. Miss Madison now is in the middle of the upper corner. Just as Bill Cantrell and the Shirnoff goes in. Schmernoff has done riding well at all. He's bounced very, very badly on the court. And now Eagle Electric has come right back. Norm Evans has found some speed. And Eagle Electric has come back. This is one of the best duels of the day. Been put on here by Schumacher and uh and Norm Evans. Madison comes over second, and Schmernoff is third, just as Eagle Electric is dueling Dollar Bell in the upper turn for fourth place. They're battling it out up there. Here's Schmernoff coming by third. And uh Billy Schumacher is uh quite a driver. Billy Schumacher rather uh took that turn just like uh a veteran campaigner. He's over the line fourth, and here comes Eagle Electric fifth. So although Dollar Bill finished fourth, Bill Schumacher has turned in some excellent driving here on this Gold Cup course. He's only 21 years old and has many, many more races ahead of him, I'm sure. And uh he's winning quite a few friends here. Uh quite a tier went up when he came across ahead of Norm Evans.

SPEAKER_11:

So the winner of B2B, the defending Gold Cup champion, Ron Muffin. His time 845. He defeated Miss Madison by 39 uh 29 seconds.

unknown:

Mr.

SPEAKER_11:

Murdoff was third, Dollarville was fourth, Eagle Electric was fifth.

SPEAKER_02:

We'll have the unofficial times in just a moment. This Gold Cup coverage is being brought to you on Radio King by Security Civisco. Well, Miss Burnout uh supposed to be running in a groove out here on the Detroit River. Ron Muskin uh has done some fine driving here in Detroit in the past. Uh, we can recall back in nineteen sixty when with uh a boat called Nitrogen 2, he scored a magnificent victory in the Silver Cup with a boat that was considered to be underpowered. And uh He has found a groove here today. His second heat time was almost identical to his first, right? Down to the second. 8 minutes 45 seconds. Miss Bardal, the winner of Eat 2B, unofficially 102.857. Second place, Buddy Myers, driving in his first Gold Cup, gave a very good account of himself with Miss Madison, but just didn't have enough speed. He finished second, 97472.

unknown:

Mr.

SPEAKER_02:

Mirnoff, with Bill Cantrell driving, is uh suffering from some obvious riding problems. She came in third, 95.575. Dollar Bill was fourth at 94.076, and Eagle Electric fifth, 93.264. Bluechip failed to start that heat. So Miss Bardall now has 700 points and moves into second place. Behind Tahoe Miss, Chuck Thompson has 800. The X side has 600. Uh after uh running over a buoy on the third lap of Team 2A. So Miss Burrell, the winner of 2B, 102.857, Madison second, Michurnoff third, Dollarville fourth, Eagle Electric fifth, Blue Chip failed to start. Pardon me for just a second. I had to catch my breath. This uh is quite a spectacle, this Gold Cup race. It's a tremendous day in Detroit. 85 wispy clouds in the sky. Uh tremendous crowd. Certainly do some of the old timers, uh, reminiscent of the Carwood era, uh, when uh Detroit uh was justly called the Powerboat Capital of the World. And uh once again with a$40,000 prize uh coming off here at the end of this race, Detroit at least for uh this year on next side, all up there tight. And believe me, if you think the charging and the hard driving is over for this Gold Cup race, you are quite mistaken. The first two heats are the very early elimination heats. They are merely the skirmishing, you might say, the calm before the storm, if you will. It wasn't uh a very uh be calmed period with all of the dueling out here, but nevertheless, I think we can expect that what we have seen thus far was just a prelude to the things to come.

SPEAKER_11:

Heats 3A and 3B are now being redrawn, and it will be very, very important who draws who, as at least six boats are still in very, very close contention for the lead here in the Gold Cup race.

SPEAKER_02:

Plenty of more action coming up on Radio King or Hydroplane Station. This is Bill Jersik in Detroit. Stand by for the greatest show in power boating. This Gold Cup coverage is being brought in the live cup. Thank you very much, and uh good afternoon to you. Phil Jersik here on the Detroit River. Uh I thought we would take this time. The five-minute gun is still a few minutes away. We have a scheduled five-minute gun in a couple of minutes, although no one is as yet on the course, but we do have plenty of official times to give you, and I think we better run through them. Here is heat 2A. Uh the winner there was Tahoe Miss, and uh his average speed was 106.759, and now that is the fastest heat thus far run today. As a matter of fact, uh Tahoe Miss has run the two fastest heats of the day uh by any boat so far. So 2A, Tahoe Miss the winner, 106.759. Uh Miss Xide was second, 102.350. Yale 5 was third, 99.878. Uh Miss US5 was fourth, 87.687, and Notre Dame had to go an extra lap uh for running over boy number 18 here in the upper turn. And Bill Muncie, who had a bit of tough luck when he uh just lost control of the Notre Dame for a split second, averaged 81.020 and finished fifth. And this will, of course, make him hustle considerably to get back into contention, and he must, in fact, win heat 3A to have a real good chance for the race. Uh, the fastest lap of Heat 2A was Tahoe Miss, the fastest lap of of the race thus far, 112.688, 112.688, and that was the second lap when he moved past the Notre Dame. Uh, this Tahoe Miss uh didn't show much in the time trials, but she has a lot uh in that Allison engine. And Chuck Thompson is driving a very heady race thus far, and uh he has turned in the fastest heat time, and that was the fastest lap thus far of the race, and was the fastest lap of heat 2A. Uh in heat 2B, the winner was Miss Bardall, Ronnie Musson, staying right in the groove, 103.036 was his official average. Second was Miss Madison, 97.670. Third was Miss Schmirnoff, driven by Bill Cantrell, 95.882. Fourth, Dollar Bill, 93.938, just edging out Miss Eagle Electric, who finished fifth at 93.434. The fastest lap on that heat was very, very slow, oddly enough. 104.509. That was the first lap for Miss Birdall. Anyway, to make a serious challenge. I call your attention to the last lap of Heat 2A. Miss Xide turned a lap at 111, and so uh the X side, which has been plagued with uh some difficulty here in the early stages of the race, uh, came to life there at the end of Heat 2A, and perhaps is to be reckoned with. And believe me, the reckoning has arrived. Heat 3A. Uh I don't know who was in charge of the draw down there, but they couldn't have drawn it any better. Here is Heat 3A, Notre Dame, driven by Bill Muncie. Miss Exide, driven by Bill Brow. Miss Bardal, the defending champion, Ronnie Musin driving, Miss Smirnoff, driven by Bill Cantrell. It's a rough fleet, and finally Billy Schumacher, or shoemaker rather, I keep uh forgetting. Billy Schumaker, uh driving Dollar Bill. Bill has had some pretty rough competition today, but he's shown up extraordinarily well. And uh the sixth boat listed for Heat 3A, uh, incredibly enough, is Miss Budweiser. She's not yet been scratched from the race, and uh perhaps Miss Budweiser will be back on the course. We don't know. Uh there was no serious damage, but certainly the partial sinking there would necessitate an engine change. There is the five-minute gun answered by no one at the moment. There is not a boat on the course and running at the five-minute gun as yet. Uh Miss Smearnoff has accepted a toll from its uh uh from its tender for just a moment, and now, after uh sputtering around for a few minutes in the upper turn, Bill Cantrell is the first to start. So he's the first man out on the course. And now we begin to talk about strategy. Of course, the strategy now are the uh most of the marbles belong in Chuck Thompson's basket at the moment. With 800 points, he is sitting very, very well, and he has drawn certainly a significantly easier group of votes to compete against in heat 3B than have the contenders here in Heat 3A. Urter Dame, Exide, and uh Miss Smirnoff and Bardall will certainly have to uh put on some terrific competitive drive to uh place here because all of them need points desperately to get in near Tahoe Miss, who uh if he happens to win 3B, will be sitting in a tremendously good position. So I need not uh remind you that this is going to be a very desperate heat for some of these boys, and we may see some terrific battling. There's ten thousand dollars in prize money waiting for the winner. That's a tremendous extra incentive. Uh aside from the gold cup itself. This is the richest gold cup ever run,$40,000 in prize money. Incidentally, the lap prizes I had listed here. Uh Tahoe Miss has won nine laps thus far at$100 each, Notre Dame six and Bardal five. And a constellation race, which was run in between heats of the Gold Cup, went to such crust over Sever Mist and Mariner 2. Uh, it was quite exciting, quite close to the dueling, but right at the moment we are more interested in the Gold Cup. Heat 3A is coming up. It looks like a showdown. This is Phil Jerzik at the Gold Cup course. I'll be back with a start of 3A.

SPEAKER_04:

This Gold Cup coverage is being brought to you by Security Savesco. You have a preschool youngster.

SPEAKER_02:

At this moment, all the boats are on the course and running, and four of the top six contenders for the Gold Cup race are running in Eat 3A. Uh, we have Notre Dame with 527 points, Xide with 600 points, Mishvirnoff with 450, Bardall with 700 points, and Dollar Bill with 254 points. So, if any one of these boats is to become a prime contender for that final heat, they will certainly be gunning here in 3A. And at the same time, if anybody else, uh, say Dollar Bill or Mish Mirnoff wants to make it into that final heat, they will have to make a very serious bid. Here in Heat 3A, the one-minute gun is sounded 55 seconds now to the start.

unknown:

The Thunderbolts are charging here on the Detroit River. Notre Dame is way at the back of the pack.

SPEAKER_02:

Bill Muncie, Mishmirnoff on the backstretch now is alongside of Bardall. Maybe Cantrell will be watching Ronnie Muston very carefully. Ron has made some good starts today. He's been very close. Looking to the top of the course, Xide again is ahead of the pack and will uh come down in the middle. He's gonna be pretty early. He's a half a minute now, and as a matter of fact, he turned now and will try for a better starting position. Xide will be way off on the outside of the course. Rather unusual for Bill Brown to come over so far. In lane uh one will be Notre Dame. Lane two, Dollar Bill, lane three, Smurnoff, lane four, Bardaugh, lane five, Xide, uh under reduced speed as they come down. E3A, ten seconds away. Here they come. Xide will be throttled way, way down, and will be Notre Dame and Bardall under full baller as they come down to the start. They're off Notre Dame and Bardall. Notre Dame over first, followed by Bardal. Gale was third, Dollarville was fourth, and Bill Burrow in the X side was throttled way, way down. He did not get a good start. He came over last, and he is last on the outside now, running full board down that chute, trying to bake up ground. This is a long, long run to the starting line. It's more, or rather, to the first turn, Bowie. It's about a mile, and it looks like Bardall may have got in there on Notre Dame. Let's check him through that turn. Uh it looks like uh Notre Dame and Bardall are running about side by side. Notre Dame and Bardall are side by side. Dollar Bell is third. Now moving into third is X side. Dollar Bell is fourth, and Murnoff is fifth going through the corner.

unknown:

They're off the first marker boy now, and Notre Dame has taken the lead over Bardaugh.

SPEAKER_02:

Notre Dame leads Bardall by a length and a half as they come off the exit mark, and they're a third of the way now. Acceleration is true uh terrific. This is going to be a fast heat. And Notre Dame dug in and took a terrific leap. And now that gave Bardall the uh advantage. Bardaugh was running, Muston charging in the lead. This is a terrific goal. They're bowed about as they come to the unclub, and they are moving. Oh my! Full blast into this turn. Bardall is bouncing! Oh, hang on! Oh run, Musson bouncing. Notre Dame is bouncing every alongside of one another. X Dide is coming up on him. X Dide is third and charging. Oh, Bardaugh bounced very violently. Notre Dame is pulling to the side of the course. Muncey is pulling to the side of the course. The Rick Flares are out. Somebody was perhaps thrown out of his boat out there. We heard a terrific loud retort. Uh such as a power letting go. I don't know what happened. Uh the Rick Flares are out. Uh we're wondering exactly why. Muncie is still in Notre Dame, it looks like. Yes, he is still in the boat. And they're coming by. Munsey sitting there. Bardall is second. And uh I don't exactly know what it was. Uh the red flares are out all over the course. A magnificent duel down into that second turn. Uh with Bardall leading, Notre Dame coming in a very, very close second, and uh X side was gating rapidly. Bill Brown came from last place and was just barreling up on the pack. A fantastic duel developing, and uh we're not exactly sure what happened down there. Uh perhaps uh it looked for the moment like something happened to Notre Dame. Uh Muncie did cut two buoys uh after he spun there, but uh then it uh we thought at first perhaps Bill was thrown out of the boat. We wanted to wait and see because the boat was still under f uh power. And uh just considerable milling about here on the judges' stand. Everybody is muttering and whispering exactly, trying to find out what happened down there. And uh we certainly do not know the reason for the heat stoppage. None of the five boats appeared to be seriously damaged. Notre Dame did have quite a blotch of oil on the right side, but uh it did not appear that any of the boats were uh damaged too severely, and it didn't appear that any driver had been thrown in the water, so perhaps this was uh somebody jumping the gun there on a flare. Uh we don't exactly know the reason, but we uh certainly had a phenomenal heat in progress when the red flares went out. Well, everybody is off the course, and uh that's it. The first running is over of heat 3A almost before it began. It was a fine start. Bardall and Notre Dame came over tight. X side trailed the field but jumped into third through the turn. Notre Dame let off the corner, but then Ronnie Mussen and the Bardall charged by him when Notre Dame bounced violently on the back shoot, and they both were both were porpoising and bouncing wildly as they went past the Detroit Yacht Club. My oh my. Uh I just hope everybody stays all glued together over there. It certainly was hectic. And X side, Bill Brown had his foot right down to the shaft almost on X side. He was really barreling after those two leaders. So, whatever the problem was, we certainly can't speculate. Uh we have not received any official word of what was wrong or whatever. I see a cruiser being towed away. Uh I'm wondering if a cruiser drifted into the course. There is a cruiser being towed away by a Coast Guard boat. Uh Muncie swerved very, very quickly uh to avoid something down there. We thought he spun maybe uh possibly a pleasure boat, got out into the middle of the Gold Cup course. Uh certainly no place to be on race day, I'm afraid. Well, we don't exactly know what we can expect next. I see they are still going to leave Miss Shemirnoff out in the water, so whether or not we will start this next heat immediately remains to be seen. Well, there just is no justice, that's all I can say. We had one of the most outstanding battles coming up here uh that one can imagine. If you can imagine uh Muncie, Mussen, and Brough all barreling into a turn together, that's what we had going for us. Uh Bardal leading Notre Dame by a bottom length, and Exide just coming up full bore into their rooster tails uh without shutting down as they reached the deceleration buoy uh by the yacht club. And then all of a sudden, uh Notre Dame swerved to the center of the course. Bardal uh went to the outside, and Exide shut down rather quickly. The boy the boats were bouncing. I thought for a moment that someone may have been thrown out, but apparently, and we say this uh only trying to estimate what happened, apparently a cruiser had maneuvered into the middle of the Gold Cup course. Uh, you and I know that that is certainly no place to be when Muncie, Musson, and Brow are moving in uh under a full head of steam. But amazing as it seems, I think that's what may have happened. He slipped past the Coast Guard. Uh, we still haven't received any official confirmation, we have no details. The Smirnoff is still out in the water, and uh, it remains to be seen whether we will have an immediate restart or whether they'll put the boys in the pits. I think we had best turn it back to our studios. Uh for the moment, there is no one else coming out on the course. Son of Heat 3A of the 1964 Gold Cup. Bill. Well, the drama begins to heighten as Notre Dame sits dead in the water. Uh, we're about three minutes to the one-minute gun. Notre Dame is still dead in the water, unable to get started for the rerun of Heat 3A. Uh, it's a shame we have to run this one over, but the official word was that the race would stop in the interests of safety, and Pleasure Boat was in the upper turn. Uh the Pleasure Boat himself was uh not moving at the time. He was just drifting across the course, and this was the reason all of the boats swerved so wildly uh when they went into that turn. So Bill Muncie, who's having some difficulty today, uh, almost uh claimed another uh cruiser, or not a Coast Guard cutter, but a cruiser this time. Fortunately, being the good driver that he is, he managed to avert a disaster here on the Detroit River.

unknown:

We're coming up on the one-minute gun.

SPEAKER_02:

We'll be back for the running of Eat 3A.

unknown:

This is Phil Jerzik in Detroit.

SPEAKER_02:

This Gold Cup coverage being brought to you by Security Civisco. Bill Muncie can't get his boat started. This is a rough break. Certainly is one of the top competitors in Gold Cup competition, sitting dead in the water right now in front of the pit, and he is in a very precarious position. He is almost in the middle of the first straightaway, which is no place to be after this race begins. Uh, it's about uh half a mile from here to there, but still he is out in the middle of the course, sideways, trying to get Notre Dame under fire. Eckside, Bardal, Schmirnoff, and Dollar Bell are out on the course. He seems to have stood up in the cockpit. He's moving forward now to the engine. He's in a very bad position, and perhaps he has given up the ghost. There's the one-minute gun. He's not on the course and he's not running. Notre Dame will not make this heat. 3A. He will have to accept the tow and be pulled off the course. A very, very tough break on the Detroit River for Bill Munsey, who just can't seem to buy any luck the last two years here in the Gold Cup. He's a four-time winner, and he is standing on the deck of Notre Dame as the other boats now. Begin to move to the top of the course, and they are skirmishing. And we have the shape up. That was too bad. The first stoppage. There's another boat, another cruiser is out on the course, right in line of the start. Another cruiser is out there running. I don't know what he's doing there, but we've got 20 seconds before the start, and he got in the way of one or two of the boats as they came down. Uh hexide is throttled way down with 10 seconds left. It's going to be a good start for the Bridgall and GL5 as they're under a full head of steam. Here they come. Everybody's throttled down. Here's the gun. And in a row of acceleration. Oh my! Uh, that was what can you say? All four boats were almost standing dead still when they came to the starting line, and they're off. Ronnie Musson managed to keep up enough boat speed to charge into the lead. Smurov was second. Exide was third, and we notice Xide is already moving very, very quickly into contention. And a very, very dejected Bill Muncie on the deck of Notre Dame, dead in the water in front of the pits. In the lead. Let's see. It looks like uh Dollar Bill is in the lead. This is incredible. Dollar Bill is in the lead, driven by Billy Schumacher. Dollar Bill and Bardall come off the corner with Schmirnoff trailing, and Xide is way back in the pack right at the moment, coming off that corner. And now Bardall with Ronnie Muson at the one-third mark in the back stretch has come out into the lead. Ronnie Muson in the Bardall is charging, but he is having a rough time of it with uh Billy Schumacher of Dollar Bell. Dollar Bill giving a trim giving a tremendous account of itself here in Heat 3A rerun. Bardall in the lead as he goes by the outfit. He has a lead of two lengths third Schmidhoff, and again a stern chase for Xide. He's last. Bill Barrow's last, and he's trying to make up ground. Here's Bardall bouncing through the turn. Bardall not performing uh as well as we would expect. And uh Bardall swinging wide. Uh Billy Schumacher and Dollar Barrow cutting in. And uh Ronnie Wilson had just a little too much acceleration that he let him off the corner. Here comes Miss Bardall now leading at the end of left number one. Miss Bardall. Followed by Dollar Bell. Here's Michael right in third place and coming in fourth, and really charging is Miss Xide. 105. 105 the average for Bardall on the first lap. Miss Bardall in the lead over Dollar Bell by three seconds. Miss Bardall leads. Dollar Bell is second. Xide is now moving up on Gale 5 in the race for third.

unknown:

We're in lap number two.

SPEAKER_02:

The rerun of Heat 3A. A terrific duel washed out by a pleasure boat on the course. We had to stop the first running of 3A at the end of three-quarters of a lap.

unknown:

And now in the rerun, Ronnie Muston has things his own way after dueling momentarily with the Dollar Bell.

SPEAKER_02:

Xide is now moving into third place in the lower corner. Off the corner now, all the boats are in the turn, and all of them are dueling tight. They're all within about 200 yards of each other now. Bardall pulling to 150-yard lead. Terrific acceleration. Bardall moves off there very briskly. He's already halfway down that back shoot and just moving out beautifully. Ronnie Muson in miss. Bardall in the lead. Second is Dollar Bill.

unknown:

And he's piling back rapidly. And Bill Burr on the X side is barreling in the third now, and he's coming up on second place.

SPEAKER_02:

Dollarville. Bill Burr is really giving that X side a drive after getting a very bad start. He's piling by the Dollar Bell. And Xide now is dueling. And he slows down as they go by the air club, and Dollarville holds on to second. Miss Burnall is coming out of the turn now first, just as Xide and Dollarville go in. And Bill Burr, I think, uh decided that he'd better wait and try and take Dollar Bell the next time around. Here now is Miss Bardall finishing lap number two. He's coming by three minutes and 22 seconds at the end of two laps. He has about a nine or ten second lead. And here comes Dollar Bill just hanging out over Exxide. Just barely. A boat that has never gone this fast competitively. And by George, he has still outfought Xide as they go down the first stretch. He has still outlasted X side. And as the Bardall comes off the lower corner in the lead, Barney Musson continues to drive in that groove at about 100-3, and he bounced very, very badly coming off that corner, but he held it. And uh X side and Dollar Bell are still battling furiously through that corner. Billy Schumaker, a rookie in this Gold Cup race, who uh need a little bit of water in the first heat, and then uh outdoored Norm Evans in the second, has come back and has done a great job driving, but Xide has now slipped by him on the outside, and Xide has charged into second, although Dollar Bell is staying right with him. Barnall is uh now just coming down to the end of the back stretch on lap number three. The Gold Cup race 1964. X side is now moving into second. Dollar Bill is third, and Mish Mirnoff just not performing today, is running fourth and trails afield about a mile behind. We hope you're enjoying this Gold Cup race coming to you on your hydroplane station.

unknown:

Radio King. This is Phil Drizick in the Garwood judges stand.

SPEAKER_02:

Don't go away. Plenty of action to come. And Ron Hussen is going to be supplying a lot of it. Here he goes over the line. Bardall finishing the third left. He's running about 106 now. He's up his speed to almost 108 this time. And in hunt pursuit now is Phil Ball. He is pouring it on with Miss Xide. Here goes Xide finishing second at the end of left three. And Xide is really moving on after Bardall. Dellerville is third. 14 seconds. So Bill Brown has managed to hold his position in second. Actually, in the last lap, he moved from third to second, but he has not lost any ground to Bardall, which is good. He is still about 350 yards behind. He's uh trailing by 14 seconds. Ron Mustin apparently saw him, and he has started to perch pretty hard now on Bardall. He's averaging almost 107 for this heat. Heat 3A of the Gold Cup. We had four of the top boats going in the first running, and then Notre Dame couldn't get started. And uh now in the rerun, it's Bardall again. The boat that was leading the first running, out comfortably, leading down the back shoot, two-thirds of the way is Ronnie Muston. His rooster tail is flat. He is riding very, very well on this lap. Uh he skipped a little bit in front of the yacht club as he goes past the deceleration mark and into the upper turn, but he is holding a comfortable lead over Miss X side. The boats are well fanned out, although they are all on the back stretch. Miss Bardall now is coming out of the upper turn just as Bill Brough in X side is going in. Leading by a couple hundred yards. Halfway down the back stretch, Dollar Bill leads Miss Schmirnoff in the race for third. And here comes Ron Muson now over the line, starting the last left. Ronnie Musin driving Miss Bardaughl, the defending champion. He means business in this Gold Cup race. And he is moving into very solid contention here. And then uh Bardall outfought him coming off uh down the back stretch. Then uh on the third lap, X side moved into second, and now it is Bardall X side, Dollar Bill, and Miss Schirnoff. And now Miss Schirnoff driven by Bill Cantrell is moving up very rapidly on the Dollar Bill, and it looks like Bill Cantrell will move his way now into third place. Although, once again, Billy Shoemaker uh with a bolt that right now doesn't seem to have enough power, he's certainly giving it all he has from a driving standpoint. Burley Musson stepped on a pad lap. He went through that one at a minute 39, 109, so he knew the next side was behind him, and he charged right out. Great driving by Ron Muson. He's skipping a little bit over on the back shoot, but he knows he's in pretty comfortable shape here in heat 3A. If he wins it, he'll have 1100 points and will be one of the top two or three boats. He certainly can't be any worse than second as he enters the final heat. And if anything happens to Tahoe miss, Bardall may well be in the lead. Here comes Ron Lusson now off the last marker boy and miss Bardall. And the checkered flag is out for Bardall. He's got a very comfortable lead. Here he comes, the winner of heat 3-8. And Ron was very, very pleased at winning that heat. That is his 13th consecutive heat in Gold Cup competition that he has finished. And he has finished 12 of them in the first three. Here's Miss Xide now, driven by Bill Brown, coming down to finish his East 3A in second place. The margin was 22 seconds. So Ron saw that Xide was behind him and he really turned it on. And now a terrific battle for third place as Bill Cantrell, the old tiger, tries to take a 21-year-old veteran in Dollar Bell. And on the last lap, Bill Cantrell moves into third place. And he beat Dollarville out by just about 15 yards. And it looked like uh the Dollar Bill lost some boat speed coming off that last corner. Bill Cantrell charged in on him and took third. And uh there was some speculation that uh Dollar Bill may have twisted a quill. Billy Shoemaker has strolled right to the pit, so perhaps there is a mechanical problem which hit Dollar Bill right at the end of that particular heat. Heat 3A, the first running, the winner missed barred all by twenty seconds. Twenty-two seconds rather over X side. Forty-five seconds behind was Miss Swerdhoff, driven by Bill Cantrell. And forty-seven seconds behind Dollar Bill, driven by Billy Schumacher. We will um check the unofficial times of East 3A and remind you that this Gold Cup race, the 56th edition, here at Detroit, is coming to you over Radio King and is being brought to you by Security Savesco.

SPEAKER_04:

Security Savesco makes it very easy for you to start to save money. With as little as one dollar bill, or with as much as$25,000. I'm getting my minutes off here.

SPEAKER_08:

Incidentally, since we started this thing, it's now twice. Let's see. Turn it off. Now it was ran about eight and a half minutes. Well, what next?

SPEAKER_07:

Where the clock has uh, you know, uh share and uh just uh Jimmy V.

SPEAKER_10:

I want to get this down too. Jimmy Volkswagen the clock for the case.

SPEAKER_07:

I don't think we said too much about her racing. She started on J U's and she was about 13 or so and she raced uh for two or three years. I think she raced uh on several occasions an A-star. Right? And uh she was uh one of the national champions in 1955 in uh D. Lake Oregon, that's that trophy right there. Well it was third, but I mean she was a little waterbury or something.

SPEAKER_10:

Um about all different kinds of things.

SPEAKER_06:

It's more than just going.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah, uh our goal, which we had going here in the first running of Heat 3A didn't materialize in the rerun. Uh, for those of you who may have just tuned in, Heat 3A, the original running, was stooped after three quarters of a lap when a pleasure boat got out on the course, and uh a very serious accident was just narrowly averted when Bill Muncie swerved his Notre Dame to avoid a collision here in the upper turn. The race was shut down. We came back for the rerun, and then uh very unfortunately for the Notre Dame camp for Shirley Mendelssohn McDonald, Dr. Fraser McDonald, crew chief Bud Melgram, and Bill Muncie himself, a four-time winner. The Notre Dame could not get started for the rerun of E3A. Certainly, we are not pleased about that. Uh there are occasions, of course, where a boat blows, and then it's not so bad, but when they don't even start for the competition, well, uh you certainly feel rather bad that they couldn't have at least got in the swim. And uh it looked like quite a thing in the first running of 3A. The second running, Dollar Bill got into the first turn first after a very poor start by all contenders. Oh, the boys have been a little too uh jumpy here at the start today. They've all had a tendency to uh to come down for the start uh a bit uh too early, and as a result, all four of the stars were throttled down here as we started E3A.

unknown:

But Dollar Bill came into the turn first. Bardall took uh Billy Shoemaker in the first turn, and then dueled briefly on the back stretch and then went on to lead all the laps and win the heat. Uh Dollar Bill gradually fell back. Miss Xide moved into second on the third lap, stayed there 22 seconds behind. Uh Mish Mirner finally caught Dollar Bill right here at the judges' stand as they finished the heat and beat him out by about a second.

SPEAKER_02:

Here the unofficial times, it was the fastest heat of the day so far. Murdoch unofficially, 108 miles an hour even for the five laps, eight minutes and twenty seconds. And on elapsed time, this will start to bring him in very close to a home miss now. A position which, of course, he wants to be in before the final heat starts. Miss Xide was second, 103.448 unofficially. Miss Murdoch was third, 99.082. Dollar Bill was fourth, 98.720. And uh on points now, at the end of three heats, Birdall has 1100, Xide has 900, and Bill Burrow just can't seem to get off that second place spot. He's been hampered by some bad starts, and they have cost him points uh in each of his three heats thus far. So Xide has 900, and then Miss Smirnoff has 675. That should be good enough to get all three of those boats into the final heat. In the running of heat 3B, which we expect in about another 15 minutes, we will have Miss Madison still very much in the running. Miss Eagle Electric, Gail Fox in the boats who made the fastest lap in heat into the leading mechanic of the race. I saw a boat pull into the pits. I wasn't sure who it was. Uh Miss Madison is on the back stretch. There is Miss Xide. I wonder if that was Terry Home Miss. I didn't get a look at him. Uh Mr. Strandoff is on here. The boat that pulled to the pits was Termole Miss. Term Miss was on the course at the five-minute gun and then went into the pits for some reason. I don't exactly know what the problem was, but I hope it isn't serious. This is no time to be caught returning uh for any repairs of any sort. There certainly is not enough time. The boats must be on the course and hunting at the one-minute gun. Five boats on the course. Tarhole miss in the pits. We're waiting for it to come out. The 1964 Gold Cup is at stake. This is Still Jersey in Detroit. You're listening to the Golf Cup racing radio King. This coverage being brought to you by Security Cinesco. You have a preschool youngster in your home. Thank you very much, everyone looking with expectancy toward the pits. Tarhole Miss is in the pits and has not come out, and we are within a minute or two of the of the one-minute gun. We don't know the reason why Chuck Thompson pulled into the pits. He's leading the race with 1200 points. He has a 14-second lead on elapsed time. This would be a terrific break for both Bardall and X side. Uh especially for Rodney Muston, who currently holds a 200-point lead over Xide. And everyone is still looking expectantly at the pits to try and see a sign of Tahoe Miss, who is not coming out yet. This is really unbelievable. Tahoe Miss 1,200 points on three straight heat victories, and he is still in the pit. U.S. Miss Smyrna, Xide, Madison, and Burno are on the course and running. They're all milling around, waiting for the start of the final heat of the 56th running of the Gold Cup race here in Detroit. And the leading boat in the race is in the pit. Duke Thompson, who has never won a Gold Cup race before, victim of tough luck in the past. We can't even begin to imagine what could have happened to him. He was out on the course, cruising around, and then suddenly returned to the pits. No sign of Tahoe Miss. He is not started up again. And of course, he must be on the course and running at the one-minute gun, and all the boats are shaping up for the start. And the leading boat in the race is not present. There. He's starting up. He's trying to get started now. We see him in the fifth trying to get started. They're coming for the start. He'll never make it. Unless he gets there's the one-minute gun. Tahoe miss can't get started. He was underway, which means he will not be disqualified. But he doesn't have a ghost of a chance of getting up here before the start of the race. Um, and of course, he would have to come in no worse than second in order to time Miss Bardo. Were he to come in third? Bardo would win the race on points if he wins the heat. 30 seconds to go. The goal cup is not going to wait for Chuck Thompson. He is trying to get across the course. He's not under any speed. This is a tremendous turn of events, of course. He had to pass his left, he won every heat, and with 15 seconds left, Darnell Miss is going to miss the big show. They're coming down to the starting line now. In first place, it's excited Bardo is really underhead of steam, though. Is it Miss Burnoff? U.S. here they come. Five seconds. There's the gun. It's Miss Burnoff.

SPEAKER_03:

And Miss Xide.

SPEAKER_02:

Miss Burn off and Miss Xide are over the line. And Bardo is third. And Bardo is right in the sprays. Right with them now. He's now moving up toward the lead. Miss U.S. is running in third position. And off Miss Madison was on the outside of the course, and we can't see what third problem is. Tartle misses on the back stretch. Tartle down. He has not yet come to the starting line. This certainly must rate as one of the most tremendous turns of fate in the history of the Gold Cup race. There have been many, but this one is one of the most bizarre and strangest of all. Shame for Toddle Miss. Bardall is ranked third now. X side is in the lead. Xide leading. There are two of the boats in front of Bardall. Eckside is first coming off the corner. Miss Madison is in there. Miss Svirnoff doing. Bardall is third. Now we see it is uh in first place. Miss Xide. Second is Madison third. Bardall coming up very, very fast. And he's fully up on uh Xide, in fact. Bardall is now second, coming up on Miss Madison, and it's X side. Bardall second, Madison third, forward to Svirnoff, fifth is US, and now Miss Madison charges back in front of Miss Bardaugh. And the three bolts are charging down the stretch. We were trying to keep our eyes there on Carol Miss, who is just now coming by to start. He's coming over the line about a minute and a half late. Hardall is third. Here they come down to finish the first half.

SPEAKER_03:

He can still win this race.

SPEAKER_02:

Here's Xide on the line, followed by Madison. Bardall third. Right now. Terrifically close building here at the end of the first lap of the race. Here's Miss Burnout fourth. MCOS is running fifth. For Xide. X side first.

SPEAKER_03:

Miss Madison second.

SPEAKER_02:

Bardall is third. Miss Bernard needs to finish third to win the race. We've just been checking on points. If Bardo finishes third, he will have 1,325 points. X side will have 1,300. Birdall will win the race on points. And uh Tarl Miss, if he finishes fifth, we'll have 1,327 points. That means that uh Ronnie Muston must take second place down there. And he has just come up on Madison now. It is Xide. Madison and Bardall doubling back there. They're off the upper turn and starting down, the lower turn rather, and starting down the back shoot. It is Xide in the lead. Miss Madison second. Bardo is sitting in third. If Bardo finishes third, he will have 1325. If Talho Miss finishes sixth, he will have 1295. So Bernie Lesson is alright if he sits back in third place just so Toho Miss doesn't move up. Coming down now to finish his first lap is Paul Home Miss running very rough. Poho miss running very rough. Here's X side leading. Hill Purrow on the X side coming through the upper turn to finish his second lap. X side is first, Madison is second. Notre Dame is third. Neal is fourth. Uh is fourth, River, and Eagle misses fifth. Hill Furrow in the lane, followed by Miss Madison. Burnoff is fourth. The only way that Chuck Thompson will have a chance to win this race is if Sarnoff or U.S. pops out. Then he will finish fifth. He'll have 1327 points. Arnoff running very, very rough. At the end of two laps, the leader, Miss Xi. Four seconds, the leader, Miss Xi. Four seconds ahead of Miss Madison. Ten seconds ahead of uh Miss Bruno is there. Incredibly enough, Carl Miss still has a chance to win the Gold Cup race. Yes, he can either catch Miss U.S., which in his present phase he will most certainly not do. Or if one of the both of the running Miss Bardall clonks out. That's Galen uh Swordhouse Brother and U.S. They're both running very well, however. Let's put on through the field. We're on the third lap of five. The leader is X side, driven by Bill Bowler coming by the yacht club. He has a 200-yard lead over Madison, a 400-yard lead over Miss Fardall. He is running about a mile ahead of Miss Burnoff and about a half a lap ahead of US 5, who is just cruising. In the lead, in the final heat is Bill Burrall from Seattle driving Miss X-Dye from Seattle. And he's having a lot of trouble keeping that X-Dide running. Bill here. At the end of the third lap, X-Side leads by eight seconds over Madison by 15 seconds over Bardall. The average speed is 105. And Tahoe misses the only chance to win the Gold Cup race, and I don't think Ron Lussen even knows this. Is if Cowhole Miss can pass Miss US and move into fifth place. Miss US is just finishing her third lap. Calhoun Miss is running uh roughly. He's been running 40 seconds behind U.S. He was a minute behind, then 43 behind. He's been gaining uh a lot of ground. He still has a lot more ground to make up, however, so there still is a chance for Carl Miss. It's a very slim one, though, and I don't even think Chuck Thompson knows it. Down the back stretch of left number four now is Xi, followed by Miss Madison. Miss Bergall is third. Bergall is content to sit back. And uh I don't think Ron Muskin realizes, uh I don't think anybody realizes that if Tajo Miss finishes fifth, he will win the race. Ronnie Musson certainly doesn't realize it. He's just cruising out there. Mick Thompson is starting to tell Home Miss. He is uh long, long way behind, but he's now 25 seconds behind U.S. He's gaining about 15-18 seconds a lap. He may still do it. I don't know. You can't tell anything can happen in a goal cup race. Here's Miss Exercise coming down to finish his fourth lap. Hill Burl. Hill Burrow coming down to finish his fourth lap, followed by Miss Madison with Bardall third. And Ron Russin is starting to charge a lot harder down. I think Ron Russin sees that Town Hall misses out on the court, and he's charging in third place. He's starting to move in now. Chuck Thompson can pass with U.S. And if he made a legal start, he will have 1,327 points. Bergho will have 1325 if he continues where he is. I don't think Ronaldin knows it. And maybe Chuck Thompson doesn't even know it. X side is in the lead. Madison is second. They are running on their last lap, but the race may be back here at the rear of the back. Uh the U.S. only has a lap and a quarter to go. Tahoe Miss has even less. Coming off the corner now at the top uh side of the course, it's Xide. One third of the way down the back shoot on his last lap around the course. Madison is second, Bardall is third. Tahoe misses coming up on Matthew S. Tajo misses gaining on Matthew S. This may be one of the most fantastic finishes in Gol Cup history. Xide is winning the final eight. I don't think the phone has ever won the race while finishing last. Talho misses margin down tremendously. This is wild. I am not all of this is unofficial. Believe me, it's incredible. It could only happen in Golf Cup boat racing. Miss Xide in the lead. Madison second. Bardall is scared, but Bardall should finish second. Ronnie Mustom is sitting back too much. If Powell miss catches EOS and he's gaining out him, he left 1327 points. Here's Xide over the line winning the Farrow heat. Xide hover. 1,300 points for X side. 1,300 points. Here's Miss Madison second. And here is Bardall third. The appearance winner of the Gold Cup. It's here, the appearance winner. He comes over the line. Bardo! Bardo had uh 1100. He picks up 225. He has 1,325 points. Exit had 1,300. Burrow misses coming up on U.S. Five in the backstretch. If he passes him, he can win the Gold Cup race, and I'm not sure that anyone knows it. He will have 1,327 points. He's getting at him. Burl miss coming down the back stretch.

SPEAKER_03:

Terrific staircase!

SPEAKER_02:

One of the greatest comebacks in the history of Gold Cup bulk racing out of the river. If his start was legal, Paulo Miss can win the race. If he passes this, he missed. He's right, he's right to see a little community for two. He still has barely enough time to stand him. Is this further for the line? Bob miss is frogle down! Table Miss is not coming after U.S. Oh my! Here's US coming back, terrible missing win the backup if he comes back to him!

unknown:

It's back to it! It's a five! That's the move!

SPEAKER_03:

U.S. is leading! U.S. is leading! And he feeds it at all! Oh my! Oh my! Oh my! Oh!

SPEAKER_02:

By the margin of a half of a boat length! Uh boat length! Pardon me! By the margin of a half of a boat length! U.S. finished fifth! Carl Miss finished sixth! And by the incredibly narrow margin, Miss Bird Hall unofficially will win the Gold Cup three for the second year in a row. Oh, what a finish! Oh!

SPEAKER_03:

What a finish. There's a little more you can say about it.

SPEAKER_02:

Hickside won the final lead, finished with 1,300 points. Madison was second with 1125. Martell was third with 1,325 points. Spearnoff was fourth. Miss US was fifth. Total miss was sixth and finishes with 1,295 points, which will put him third. The margin of difference, the margin of difference, a boat length. Oh my, oh my. We almost won. We did anyway. We did anyway have one of the most unbelievable finishes in Gold Cup history. With Miss Bardall winning for the second straight here, and Tahoe Miss coming in second. Tahoe Miss now going by. Here's Bardall, the winner of the race, Ronnie Muston waiting. It was wild, and we will be back to recapitulate the unofficial final points in just a moment. Bill Cierzick talking on Radio King. This Gold Cup coverage being brought to you by Security Civisco.

SPEAKER_04:

Either a five percent regular account.

SPEAKER_02:

She is the defending champion and has again won the Gold Cup. The average speed was in the neighborhood of 104 miles an hour. It will not be a no-race record. We did not break any race records today, but we still saw here in Detroit one of the most incredible Gold Cups of all time. My name is Bill Kersik. Uh this is a hobby with me, motor racing and announcing. I love both of them. And for me, this was certainly one of the most exciting Gold Cups ever. I hope it was for you, our listening audience. I would like to thank all those who worked so hard throughout the week to make this broadcast possible. Bob Shaler from the phone company who handled communications on the race, and who incidentally did such a fine job in getting KING accumulated there for any eventuality.

SPEAKER_01:

On the Laotian border below North Vietnam, government troops and their American advisors have set up a tightness.

SPEAKER_12:

Were you aware of the possibility that Tom will miss half US and win? Well, I uh possibility, but he got started so far behind I noticed that I didn't think he could do it, but I heard it was pretty close to it. Actually, the margin was about fifteen feet, they said. That's as good as a mile for me, then. I know. Uh here's only part of all the owner, only uh you're certainly to be congratulated on uh having a fine piece of equipment and a great crew and a fine driver. Uh only congratulations, I agree. I agree on that point. I got a good career and a good driver, and uh pretty good ball.

SPEAKER_04:

Uh I'm very happy to have three children of the Stephen Chester family missing for five hours from their home near Redondo Beach. See you again next year.
