Episode 190: Bryce Todd, Part 2

We wrap up our conversation with Bryce Todd as he steps into the GP class with the brand-new Armadillo Breeders Association team and races the clock toward Columbia Cup. We dig into how the deal comes together, what it takes to rebuild a weathered boat the right way, and why GP racing can be the loud, fast fix many fans have been missing.

And today, we're actually gonna have part two of my interview with Bryce Todd. This is episode 190. It's Tuesday, July 21st. I know many of you are getting ready to either go over to the Tri-Cities for the big H1 Unlimited and Grand Prix American hydroplane race over there, the Columbia Cup. It's always the pinnacle of summer. At least in my mind, it's always the pinnacle of summer over at the Columbia Cup, and then the next weekend over at Seafair. I'm really looking forward to it. And uh hopefully I'll see you over there. If you if you do, if I do see you over there, please say hi. But for this episode, we're concluding my interview with Bryce Todd, a young gun, young driver for the GP 14 Armadillo Breeders Association, owned by Jay LeCrone and Denise Garl. A brand new team for the GPA series. Really excited to see them out again. They've been around the sport for many years and they've taken a break, but they're they're coming back in a big way with the GPs. And I'm looking forward to what they'll be able to do here in the future. So, with all that said, let's just jump in to part two and the conclusion of my interview with Bryce Todd.

How Bryce Gets The Driver Call

Well, I mean, part of the reason why we're talking today is because last January it was announced that you were the new driver for a newly formed team. Uh Jaylor Crone, who has a rich history of crewing for many teams over the years, uh, with his along with his partner Denise Garrell, but they're forming a new GP team called the Armadilla Breeders Association. But you got the call to become their driver. How did this come about?

Well, I knew about Jay and Denise because I'm I'm very close with um the old ferrells, and uh they sold one of their boats to Jane Denise and then now have it back, and so definitely just talking about some of those boats and um through stories I knew about Jane Denise. I've never met them before. Um, and if I can actually little shout out to Brian Richards here, Jane Denise bought that boat, and we're looking for a driver. And um, I I love GPs, they're my favorite class. I think they're the best thing in the world. I'm an engine builder, so of course you gotta love the big horsepower piston boats. Yeah, they actually reached out to Brian Richards, and uh we're we're talking to him about his thoughts and opinions about boats, motors, and and drivers. And um, Brian brought my name up. He was like, Well, try calling this guy. He's he's all hot to get into a GP and he loves them, and he'll he'll do whatever it takes to get into one. So I believe Denise reached out to me on a random week night, and I did not expect it at all. But you know, I I I took the seat. Um, you know, any anything for uh seat time and to get into one of these GPs, and you know, it's I think it's a perfect fit. I'm new to driving GP, they're new to owning one, so we're all gonna learn together, and I I think it's gonna work out.

Yeah, yeah, I like the mentality there because it sounds more of like a long-term uh relationship, right? Like you're yeah, like they have they have you have your history with hydroplane racing, and they have their history, but first time doing it together with a GP team. And I just and I and you're younger, and I just kind of think like watching like the NFL drafts, you know, get the phone call and start trying. Like, what what were your thoughts when you when you got that call?

SPEAKER_01 4:45

I was pretty confused, uh honestly. I I was eating dinner or something, and and I got a call and I I missed it, and then I got a voicemail and says, you know, hey, this is Denise. I was calling, you know, I own a GP, and I think that's all I read, and I called back. And um and she brought up, you know, hey, we're we're talking to a few people, um, but you know, we're really interested in you. Um, we've heard you're great driver in the 350, you're knowledgeable with motors, you you know, knowledgeable of boats and building them, and and um, you know, we think it would be a good fit if you're interested. And I don't think I waited two seconds to say yes. And um, you know, it just kind of stemmed from there, but it felt it felt good, you know, especially, you know, I'm not super connected with uh Richards racing. Um, I pop out there every once in a while, but just from me showing the excitement and love for GP and always asking questions and going to see what they're doing. Well, you know, I prove for the U21, um, running over there as much as I can to just see what the GP guys are doing. Brian saw the interest from me and and and put my name out there, and so it was pretty nice of Brian and really cool of Jane Denise to give me the opportunity.

Yeah, I mean that's high praise to have Brian say your name like that, and uh and for for Jay and Denise both to to acknowledge that and to to reach out for you.

Why This Team Feels Right

said it took you two seconds, but what made you decide this was a good fit for yourself?

SPEAKER_01 6:24

It was that it was a GP. Um, all right. Anything with a big blower motor. Um, it's an opportunity, you know. It's it's hard. There's like we were talking earlier, there's there's not a lot of um, I wouldn't say there's not a lot, there's not a lot of people that come out anymore or new teams developing.

Um, so you kinda right now I feel like there's the stage where you kind of got to take every opportunity you get. And um talking to Denise on the phone, she's very nice and very committed and wanting to come out, and you know both of them, Jay and Denise, were um they want to do it correctly and they want to do it safely. Um, and and that stuff all speaks to a driver, you know. You a driver always always likes to hear when the owner cares about their safety and cares about doing it right, you know, they don't want to go out and just have issues all the time, they'd rather miss a few races at the beginning of the year to make sure it's done correctly.

Yeah, yeah, definitely.

So stuff like that always stands out, and um and after a few weeks being around them or months now, I guess. Um I I think it was a good decision. Um, you know, they've been great to work with and you know, um very, very knowledgeable being around Jay. He's got a lot of stories, he's been around for a long time in the boat racing. Yeah, um, Denise has also been around for quite some time as an owner and a truck driver, and um just very helpful. And you know, they they always ask your opinion, you know, they don't just do stuff when I'm not there, they always reach out, what do you think about this? Should we change this? And it's it's it's being not there, but being involved is a very good feeling.

Yeah, yeah. I think that's huge for the synergy of the team. Uh when you're involved like that. It's like it's a great process.

You know, right, right. Yeah. Well, fantastic.

Boat History And Old Battle Scars

Well, let's talk about the boat. Because I don't know the history that well of this boat. Where where did they purchase this boat? I know they're they're over there right now sanding it, getting ready. They're prepping it for the Columbia Cup, which I want to talk more about, but yeah, but what's the history on this on this hole?

SPEAKER_01 8:54

So I'm not gonna be a hundred percent accurate. Um sure someone knows a lot more than me about it. I believe it's a 2008-ish Bergeron. Um it's um been through quite a bit of owners. Um I believe I'm Huey Newport owned it at one point, and uh it's it's got some newer Henderson sponsons on it. It was the copper tone boat. I don't know if you've ever remember seeing copper tone GP. That's that's this boat. Okay, um, and it was very competitive. Um, I believe when Huey had it, and then um I think Martin Rock Rock on drove it, I believe. It had some very competitive heats, and um it was it was pretty fast. Um, it's it's pretty wide boat, definitely um would do good on smaller courses. It's got a big wide air trap on it. Okay, but I don't I don't know a ton of history of the boat. I've got a few photos of it saved in my phone of it being the copper tone. Yeah, one photo of it blowing over and the left sponson coming off, I believe, but um sometimes stuff like that just means it was fast. Um but I I don't know a ton of the history of the boat.

That's okay, that's all right. Yeah, well, uh what was the condition like when uh Jay and Denise got the boat?

Rebuild Plan And Safety Upgrades

SPEAKER_01 10:25

Um it needs help for sure. Um, it's getting it's getting the help, it's getting the attention it needs now. Yeah, um, it was it's definitely been ran hard over the years, it's got some cracks and some stress, and um that's all being worked out. Um, and then this is actually the boat that Eric Christensen campaigned for a year. Um, and then I believe once Eric was done with it, uh, or uh he was moving on to unlimited or something. Um the boat unfortunately got a little bit weathered, and um, and we're seeing some cracks and stuff here and there, but it's all being taken care of. The capsules um got some new stuff getting put into it, new safety devices, seats, seat belts. Um we pro we stripped it down to a bare hole. It's gonna be new hardware, um, new, all new safety stuff, new gauges, all new wiring. Um, all the cracks are being fixed, um, redoing all the pedal assemblies. So it's gonna be it's gonna be pretty healthy when we're done and ready to come out.

Okay. Well, it sounds like you're you guys are doing it right. Yeah, especially if it's been sitting out and gotten weathered. You gotta take everything apart and and kind of rebuild from the bottom up.

Yeah, and well, you gotta dig deeper than you even want to because you never know.

Yeah, yeah. So what's what's it gonna take? Because I know the goal is to be out for the Columbia Cup, which is only weeks away. What's it gonna take to get it from today to getting over there in the Tri-Cities and on the water?

SPEAKER_01 12:06

Um, you know, from talking with Denise in the last few days, it seems like the all the repairs have been finished and they're moving on to paint this week. Um, all the hardware has already been checked and recoded. So once the painting's done, that hardware will fly back on. And uh they've got they've got motors on standby. And um, they were getting last time I was out there, they're getting new motor plates made and some new oil pans ordered, and um, you know, keeping everything pretty simple on it. So once it's painted and motor plates are ready, it should be drop a motoring, wiring system checks, and you know, finish getting me fitted in the boat. It should all go pretty quick from there.

Good. Okay, well, glad to hear that. Like you said earlier, like it's there's not a lot of new teams around, so I'm glad to have have a new team out for the GP series, and I'm glad to see Jay back out there.

SPEAKER_01 13:11

Like he's he's screwed a lot of teams, so yeah, he's he's screwed a lot and been around for long a lot longer than I've been alive um in boat racing. And um, he's excited. I don't I honestly don't think this was his idea to go buy a GP. I think Denise showed up with it one day. Um but but he he looks excited to go back to a race and work on them. And um, you know, once it's in your blood, it never leaves.

No, no, it's it's an addiction or problem. I don't know what you want to call it, but yeah, definitely a problem. All right.

Timeline To Make Columbia Cup

Well, the the team's name is Armadilla Breeders Association. What in the world does that mean? I don't can you can you clarify, explain what what the significance is behind the team's name?

SPEAKER_01 15:07

No, I really can't, you know, and I all right. I uh I've been wondering since the day I heard of the name, and I'm pretty sure everyone else has been wondering. Um there's been some pretty good comments on Facebook. I believe one guy said we should help hand out armadillo shells for helmets. Um I don't know if there's actually a reason behind it or not. Um I jokingly brought it up to Denise one day and she said it's a conversation starter, and um, it sure is. Um everyone that sees the hat, I've uh you know, we've got a few of the hats already, the demo hats. It always starts a conversation. And one thing Denise did say to me one day about it when we were joking is um if you type it into Google, the boat race team's the only thing that pops up.

Well, it's it's a unique name, that's for sure.

And I say, you know, it I guess it is. So uh there's no real answer from me. Uh Denise might have one later on in the year. If uh if you get her on, she might be able to tell you more. Um to me and to everyone else at the moment, it's a conversation starter.

Yeah, well, I I I want to have Jay and Denise back on the on the program. Uh we actually had we're planning to talk with them, but uh they're they're they're wrenching, they're they're getting stuff ready. So I look forward to that conversation later down

The Team Name That Starts Talks

Yeah. Well, it's it takes it takes a village to make this happen, and I know there's more people behind it than just Jay Denise and yourself. Can you share, shed some light on the on the crew, who's all helping out, who's making this happen?

SPEAKER_01 17:04

Yeah, so the majority of the work right now is me and uh Jay Denise. Um, we do have uh one of Huff's old crew guys, Buck McCoy, um, which has been around helping Steve with uh pretty much everything, but uh he's wanted to come around and help and and he'll be helpful. Um Jay, you know, Jay's been around for um doing this. He can do a lot of this himself, but he he works a tremendous amount, just like me. We work tons of hours and we're not home a lot, so that's that's been one of the things that's put us a little bit behind is just um Jay being busy, which is fine. Um I know Denise has said, you know, we're bringing on a few other guys from some inboard teams. I believe Justin Burnett, um, he drives some two five uh two five mod. He's he's gonna come on and help, and I believe his wife is coming on as well. Um the the biggest one though is is David Warren.

Crew Lineup And Veteran Mentorship

Um, he's definitely people know that name. David's driven uh GPs and Unlimited. Um David's drove for Jane Denise when they had their last boat, I believe. And uh he's come on and he's got a rich history in GP as well, I believe with the GP19. And um he's been a huge help on the boat, uh, knowledge on the motors, and I I think it's great for David to be there for not only the boat, but me as well, is because I'm a young driver and um I don't know everything. But David's there to give advice, he's there to point me in the right direction, you know, give me tips on where to try to be or timing marks, and you know, just having a guy on the crew that used to be a driver in many classes, including GP and Unlimited, is it has already been a huge help, but it is gonna be a big help in the future as well.

Yeah, so having having David Warren on there is is huge. Um, and and and not only that, his personality and sense of humor is great. So he always makes it a good time when we're at the boat shop as well.

Good. Yeah, well, that's what makes it fun, right? The people that we're doing it with.

Yeah, yeah, of course.

Yeah, and uh it's it's a good mentality to have like that you don't know everything and to utilize the help of your of your team and and who you're surrounded with.

SPEAKER_01 19:52

Yeah, no, you you've gotta take all the advice you can get, especially from people that have done more than you.

SPEAKER_00 19:58

Yeah. Well, I'm not I'm not gonna say if, I'm gonna say when you get to Tri-Cities. Uh, and unfortunately, you're not gonna have a ton of testing time before then. You're gonna have some some time on the water, hopefully, on that Friday. But what do you think their goals are gonna be and what do you want to accomplish that first weekend?

SPEAKER_01 20:17

Start and finish heats. There's there's uh no talk around the shop about going out and setting a record or trying to beat everyone and ruining all the equipment. It's just figure the boat out, you know, start and finish. Um sometimes collecting points, especially in in GP as we saw last weekend with motors blowing up and and gun jumpers is making a clean start and keeping the boat together the whole weekend sometimes is a bigger thing than being fast.

Being fast always needs to be there, but for us first time coming out, all of us except for David being new to GPS. Um I I think it's um smart to just go out, make it run, make a clean start, and finish every heat. Um, I think that's the biggest goal for

First Weekend Goals And Clean Starts

us right now.

Yeah, yeah, you can't ask for too much more with everything brand new, whole new world. So yeah, but yeah, realistic goals for that. But that's huge. Like you said, it's it I think it's different than unlimited because the unlimiteds have, I think, a higher consistency rate with the turbines.

Um yeah, those those motors don't um explode as much as GP Zaddle.

SPEAKER_00 21:39

Right, right. So uh yeah, the uh consistency is is gonna be key, and and we saw that in Madison, just like you said.

SPEAKER_01 21:46

Yeah, especially the making clean starts. I know Madison can be a tricky course, um uh for well, the rough water, as we saw, especially, you know, we saw those photos of Jimmy Shane water, but um that that whole course can be a little tricky, but you know, hey, and the other thing with um uh unlimited as well is I'm brand new to assigned lanes, I've only ran an APBA, so I've always been fighting for lanes. I know where my boat wants to be. I set my boat up for where I want to be, and then I fight to get there. Um, assigned lanes is a whole new world to me. Um so that's gonna be different. Getting timing marks, knowing where your lane's gonna be, setting up a boat for knowing where your lane's gonna be is is gonna be different. And so that's gonna also go along with the question of our goals. Our goals to get timing marks and learn where we need to be and learn the boat.

Yeah. Yeah. A lot to encompass into our first weekend, right?

Well, are the plans for for you guys to make the rest of the the series? Are you gonna be able to go to Seattle? In San Diego as well, yeah.

So the the original plan from uh Denise was um she really wanted to make Tri-Cities in Seattle and the talk of San Diego is definitely there. Um, I guess we want to see how Tri-Cities in Seattle goes. Um if they go excellent and they're happy. Um, I think I think the talk of San Diego is definitely there. Um, and then they were also talking about trying to maybe hit a few region inboard races just for seat time.

Yeah.

You know, we can try different things. You know, you you want to try changing gears in a gearbox or trying this propeller, but it's hard to do at a race when you know, you know what you have kind of works. You don't want to change something and have it go backwards when you're trying to get points or when it heats. And so I think hitting some inboard races for not only my own seat time, but us learning parts on the boat um is a possibility as well.

That'd be fantastic because even at the race site, it's limited seat time. You don't have you don't have just open

Season Plans And Extra Seat Time

water all day, so it may it makes it makes it tough. Yeah. So what what would your expectations be for the rest of the season? And what would a success be for the rest of the season for you?

SPEAKER_01 24:28

Successful season for me would just um getting to know the boat, getting to know GPs in general, not just that one, but um under starting to understand the class more, um, the boats more, you know, a lot bigger boat than I'm in. Um, as I've been described from other GP drivers, it's like riding a it's like a skateboard with a V8 on it, you know. They've nothing nothing else has that power to weight ratio, and so it's a lot to get used to. And I want to I want to get used to the boat and the motors and um the format of racing. You know, I've never gone out and qualified and had lane positions, and um so I think a successful season is just ending the year um with the boat in one piece, uh, with motors still running and feeling more confident in the boat, myself and the team.

Okay, yeah, I have something to build off of for the next year, correct?

SPEAKER_01 25:29

Yeah, of course.

SPEAKER_00 25:31

Yeah. Well, a lot of the fans that listen to the show are kind of unlimited first for in their mindset, so or have a bigger history of following the unlimited. So, what if you could talk to the fans now? What do you want them to know about GP racing? And what would you like to tell them about yourself for them to get to know you a little bit better?

SPEAKER_01 25:53

Well, for GP racing and people on the internet, I think 90% of the comments I ever read is people miss thunderboats. Um, I think the GP is the closest thing you're gonna get these days. Um, they're loud, they're fast, and uh a lot of fans miss the um the loudness. You know, my grandma uh she grew up and lived in her whole life in West Seattle. And okay, she used to always tell me, Oh, I miss when you used to be able to hear the boats from here. And uh that's all I ever hear from the guys that miss the old Thunder boats. And and um, I think GPs don't quite do them the all the justice, but I I

Explaining GP Racing To Fans

SPEAKER_01 26:38

I think the the noise level coming back is a is a big thing for a lot of people, and the speed and they're so the the boats are so agile and their acceleration is just it's a really cool class to look out for.

Yeah, it fills that void. Uh it's always fun to watch on the shorelines when uh GP starts up and heads turn and you can see people wander from the from the grasses or from the you know from the road. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01 27:13

My my dad never saw GP. They didn't really come down to Pateras a lot when I was younger. I don't think I ever saw one there. And uh his first time seeing one, he showed up as five or six were coming for the start, you know, five or six wide, you know, yeah, set seven seven thousand plus RPMs. And he came over to me and he's like, That was pretty cool. He's like, It was really loud, but it was cool, yeah. And uh, and I was like, Yeah, and and then you know, he he hit me with the classic line, it sounded like the old thunder boats, yeah. And so um, yeah, no, I I I think the noise and the speed of them is is something that people that don't follow the inboard racing really know about GP until they show up at you know seafair last year. You know, I heard a lot of people last year at C Fair comment on how much they loved watching Austin and Jeff battle it out in the final. And um I think I think it's a great class.

Oh, yeah, it's fantastic. I think it's uh something the fans have have yearned for, and it's uh it's just fun.

But what about yourself? What what can you tell the fans about yourself?

SPEAKER_01 28:31

That's a hard question to just answer. Um yeah, it's it's it's hard to say. Um just a kid that fell in love with fast boats at a young age and pursued the dream, you know. Uh just happy to be at the race. Um, you know, even if I'm not racing, I'm always happy to be there, always helping. I I hooked up uh with the O'Farrell's a few years back, actually met Gunner at an inboard race and um been working on their unlimited and other unlimiteds, you know, with him and uh small boats. So I've I've been around pretty much every single class except for speed skiffs because they don't come out west. Um but I've just you know, and it's not only hydras, I work on um speed boats and all sorts of random stuff. I've really been into V drive stuff for a few years, and um I'm just all around a boat geek, you know, all into the motors and the boats. And um, if you ever see me at the pits or anything, just start

Uh-huh. Fantastic. Well, with all this said said, you you mentioned that your your parents, uh your dad was a racer, had to stop, and parents may not be as into it as you are, but what is what do they think about where you are now with it?

SPEAKER_01 30:06

They're definitely impressed with where I've come. You know, I've got I've come a long ways in three years. I went from yeah, you know, wanting to crew from someone to now got multiple boats cut to smithereens because I want to set a world record, and it's the only thing I do. Um, you know, and I work on other boats and uh build a lot of motors, and um the motor thing was a given my whole life, but my parents have been very impressed with where I've come with the boat building and driving. My my dad, that's the easy one. My dad was a racer, and so he gets it, he loves it. He uh he comes to most of the races. He didn't I only ran two races last year before I ended up in the hospital, yeah. And he didn't make those two races because he was in the hospital getting his knee replaced.

So last year he didn't get to see much, but um, he loves it. He's just happy to see me do what I love, and he's happy to see someone in our family still racing. Um, my mom that was the hard one to

Family Pride And Safety Fears

convince. Yeah um all she ever seems to remember the old days of is people not people not making it through an accident, right? And and as much as you explain to your mom that capsules and air mass and safety's come a long way, and um there seem it seems to be a lot safer now, not as much happens, thankfully, and you know, hopefully it continues to be like that. They don't want to believe it, you know, they just always think of worst case scenario. So my mom's always hard uh to get through. She she doesn't really she wants to go to the races, but I think at the same time she doesn't, you know, she wants to see me live my dream, but she's terrified of if something happens. Uh yeah, you know, I think a year or two ago, my boat I hung my boat out at Black Lake pretty good, um, couple feet out of the water for you know 50 yards or something, and went out to the hauler, and mom was just standing there glaring at me, like that's it, you're done. And no, mom, that just means you're going fast. And you know, she she's come to like it. She's got photos of it all over the house, and oh, good, good. She's she's coming around, she's proud. They're both proud.

Um, I've got a middle brother that's um I think racing's the last thing he's ever looked into. Um I think I think he tops out about 60 miles an hour on the freeway. And um he came to like one race and and saw the boat doing you know 120, maybe even a little more in the five-liter with four other boats on its side. And he told my mom he used like I can't even watch this. Oh, I'll call you guys later. Um, but yeah, my family's full of different people and and different characters. But you know, I think in the end everyone's just happy that we're all living our dream.

Yeah, yeah. Well, look, you have to pursue it, and uh really excited for for you this year, making that step into the GP class, and excited to see where you can take this thing.

Yeah, I I can't wait, man. It's it's gonna be a good year, and I think we've got a good, exciting team together. Um, you know, C and Jay excited to get back into boat racing, and uh Denise excited to get back into it. You know, they had they had some time off um from the unlimited, and um it's just it's it's just all around exciting. I I can't wait. David Warren can't wait. We got him capsule trained. Um, he's gonna take the boat out somewhere. I'm not sure where yet. I think um he he's gonna take it out one because because why not? It's fun, and he's the driver and he wants to. And uh, but also I think that will help with setup as well. You know, uh, he's been in more GPs than I have. Um, and so maybe he can take it around and give me some tips on that. So I think I think we've got a good program that's just waiting to come all together.
